Krest Homes – Energy Star – Green Building Practices

Krest Homes is dedicated to building a greener future for generations to come.

In little more than a decade, the blue ENERGY STAR symbol has become a consumer icon in Canada and in November 2016, became mandatory for all new construction homes in Alberta.  Krest Homes has previously implemented 95% of the Energy Stars building standards into our builds since the company began in 2012.

Energy Stars compliant homes represent the standard of premium energy efficiency in many product categories.  Some of these standards already incorporated in a Krest Home include: high performance low-e windows, water conserving fixtures, qualified hot water heaters, 2”x 6” wall studs, air sealed electrical boxes, insulated exterior doors, house wrap, and tightly sealed air ducts.

Krest Homes Green Building Practices

  • 90+% efficient furnaces extract more than 90% of the heat from the fuel, resulting in very little waste and reducing the cost of heating your home. A heat or energy recovery ventilation system (HRV or ERV) ensures your home has controlled ventilation.
  • If purchased and installed, high preforming air conditioning is 30% more efficient and uses a refrigerant that doesn’t damage the ozone layer. *air conditioner ruffed in, but unit not included as standard.
  • High-performance low-e windows reduce heat loss by up to one third, keeping you more comfortable while saving energy.
  • Energy star qualified appliances with the energy star label can use up to 50% less energy than non-energy star models.
  • Water-conserving fixtures, allow today’s toilets, shower heads, and faucets to use less water while still maintaining performance.
  • 12” heel height providing extra insulation where the top and bottom chords meet all while maintaining maximum insulation.
  • Energy star qualified hot water heaters can use up to 50% less energy than standard models, saving you money on utility bills.
  • Insulated basement walls and watchdog waterproofing on basement walls and floors. Seals out moisture and prevents leaks all while keeping your basement comfortable all year round by reducing heat loss through the foundation.
  • 2″x 6″ at 24” O.C. wall studs add 2 inches of wall insulation for better energy efficiency and comfort, lower heating and cooling costs.
  • Air sealing electrical box provides positive seal that stops airflow and moisture migration, saving you money on your utility bills.
  • Spray foam at rim boards can go a long way towards helping reduce energy bills.
  • Insulated exterior doors assist in keeping cold and heat at bay, and help lower heating and cooling costs.
  • Low-voc products, like the paints, woodwork, and carpet materials we use in our homes, emit low or zero volatile organic compounds (vocs), which helps maintain a healthy indoor air quality.
  • House wrap reduces air infiltration by tightly sealing the building envelope, which can improve the energy efficiency, air quality, and comfort of your home.
  • Blown-in attic insulation allows for a tighter fit and seal. It can be installed around corners, beams, or wiring and fills the voids, resulting in a better-insulated home with r40 factor.
  • Tightly sealed air ducts direct air to where you need it for increased heating and cooling efficiency.
  • Manufactured wood components, including engineered roof trusses, floor systems, and wall panels which use less material and reduce waste.
